Schedule of Coming Events

Saturday Evening Special Events

Kabile

Saturday, August 21, 2010:  Live traditional Balkan dance music by the Bulgarian band Kabile at our regular Saturday night dancingKabile (pronounced "kah-bee-LAY") is a top favorite in the south and east Thrace regions of Bulgaria for weddings, baptisms and other cultural celebrations.  All of the members are professional musicians who are active in teaching and promoting Bulgarian music.  Collectively they form one of the most respected ensembles in Bulgarian Thrace, playing and singing in the traditional Thracian style.  Now they are touring the United States again, playing at Balkan dance and music camps and other events.  We were fortunate to have the band in St. Louis two years ago, and some of the individual members in previous years; now you can hear and dance to them again!  Music and dancing will start at 7:30 p.m.  Admission for this special night is $5, age 18 and under free.

Ice Cream Social

Contributions for refreshments would be appreciated.  (Note that, contrary to previous announcement, the Ice Cream Social will be on a different Saturday — see below.)

Saturday, September 18, 2010:  Ice Cream Social, starting at 9:00 p.m.  Ice cream in dishes, ice cream cones, hot fudge sundaes, root beer, floats, banana splits, and anything else you can think of!  The IFDA Soda Jerks (see photo, courtesy of Gene Woodford) will be ready to scoop.  Bring your favorite toppings; IFDA will supply all the ice cream.

Balkan Folk Singing Class with Marvin Moehle

Marvin's Singing Class

Tired of singing "La La La" to your favorite folk dance songs?  Want to learn the real words, the melody, and the meaning of the songs?  Now is your chance!  Come to our free Balkan Folk Singing Class on most Saturdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the University United Methodist Church (same location as regular dancing and an hour earlier).  The class will be taught by Marvin Moehle, our resident expert on Balkan customs, costumes, and folklore.  Everyone is welcome, and no experience is required.  Don't be afraid to join in any Saturday — but you might check in advance if you are coming a large distance.  Anyone knowing Marvin knows that it will be a fun class!  (Photo by Gene Woodford.)
Note:  Class is on hiatus for Summer 2010.  Watch for further information in the fall.
