Yves Moreau is one of the World's foremost figures in folk dance teaching.  He teaches mostly non-choreographed village material which he has collected during his many field trips to Bulgaria.  His clear and greatly entertaining teaching style has made him a favorite not only in North America but in Europe and Asia as well.  He has also produced many CDs and DVDs of Bulgarian dances (photo at right is from Volume 5 of his DVD series).  For more information about Yves Moreau, visit his Web site at http://www.bourque-moreau.com/main-menu-ym.html.

Bulgarian dances can range from simple dances to make conversation by, all the way to quite vigorous dances.  The workshop will begin with simpler dances and will progress over the course of the weekend.

Schedule and Prices

See schedule at left.  Individual sessions, Saturday night dancing, and lunches may be paid for at the door.  A weekend package is available for $45 which includes everything in the schedule except for the lunches.  The review session is for workshop attendees only, but other interested persons are invited to come and observe.

Locations

University United Methodist Church:  6901 Washington Ave., University City, MO (northwest corner of Washington and Trinity, south of the Lion Gates on Delmar); see Google Map .  (Note: Most streets in the area other than the main streets are not through.)  Parking is available in the church lot and on Trinity, but please do not park on the residential part of Washington.  Walk by the playground in front of the church, and enter by the door at the inner corner of the L-shaped building.

Principia School:  13201 Clayton Rd, Town and Country, MO (north side of Clayton Road about 1 mile east of Mason Road).  The workshop will be in the Pre-School Gym.  See Google Map for directions to Principia School (the address on the map has been changed slightly to put the marker closer to the proper entrance; marker location is still only approximate).  The school has two entrances, and the one closest to the Pre-School is the east entrance which is a few hundred feet east of Tammany Lane (not the Y-entrance at Takara Drive).  Once at the east entrance, proceed as follows:

  • There will be a large Principia sign and a security station.  Simply let the guard know that you are here for the folk dance, or just continue in if the station is unoccupied.
  • Keep to the left when the road forks.
  • The first building on the left is the Pre-School; it is less than 1/2 mile from the entrance and is visible from the entrance.  There are "Winnie the Pooh" characters on the porch.
  • There is parking in front of the building and in the main parking lots adjacent to the building.  You may park anywhere where there is space.
  • Signs will be posted inside the building.  The main hallway turns left, and the gym is all the way down the main hallway at the very end.

Other Information

To hear examples of the type of dance music that will be featured at this workshop, tune in to Music from the Hills on Sundays from 4:00 to 6 p.m. on radio station KDHX, 88.1 FM in St. Louis, hosted by IFDA member John Uhlemann.  You can also listen online — see www.kdhx.org.

Dress:  Dress is casual.  Hard-soled shoes (leather or synthetic) are recommended, as rubber tends to stick to the floor.

Food:  Lunch will feature soup and sandwiches.  Dinner will be our usual variety of tasty potluck contributions.  Contributions of fruits and sweets for snacks would be appreciated.
